Student production company  brings globe-trotting film to Kingston University

Get ready to see Kingston University transform into a film set.

Purpose Arts, set up by students across different faculties at Kingston University, is set to begin shooting a political film that will take place in Kingston University, as well as Serbia and Ukraine.

“The film follows the story of two future leaders of tomorrow, both coming from elitist families, and suffering at an early age,” said Solomon Phoenix, one of the co-founders of Purpose Arts .  “These two characters, both gifted in martial arts, arrive from the Western and Eastern hemisphere and end up at the same institution to be educated and groomed.”

The film will incorporate suspense and drama with subliminal political undertones.

“Both of the characters are manipulated by the same hidden hand,” said Mr Phoenix. “They are on a collision course that will shake their communities and the world.”

According to Mr. Phoenix, the shooting will begin next month. The team will be flying out to Ukraine to film the very first scene of the feature.

“We will start shooting our opening scene abroad next month,” said Mr Phoenix. “We have secured filming locations at the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, in Serbia, as well as here at the university.”

The film was initially inspired by a rap track that Mr Phoenix and his friends recorded a year ago. According to Mr Phoenix, the song was thought provoking and addressed political issues. Not long after, Mr Phoenix and his team started filming scenes for the music video before deciding to turn it into a short film.

“The rap track was deeply political and was soaked in questions about international relations,” said Mr Phoenix. “I and two others from the university went along and recorded the track professionally.  My ambition was then to record a video for the track.”

The production company is a small unit but already has high aspirations. Purpose Arts is aiming to finish the ambitious project within a two year span and will send off the finished product to film festivals.

“Ideally we want to submit to the Festival De Cannes, however that really depends on the schedule,” said Mr Phoenix. “However, our strategy is submitting our material to various film festivals. We anticipate we will be finished in just over two years from now.”
